You got the ring. You got the yes. Where do you go from here?
For many couples, getting engaged is an exciting, ultra-romantic whirlwind of happy calls and texts to family members, and recounting the proposal story to everyone you know.
Once you've both floated down from Cloud Nine, the reality sets in: You have a wedding to plan.
To help you in finding your perfect wedding vendors, here's a simple step-by-step guide you can follow once you're engaged.
1. Set your date and budget
Before you can start approaching vendors, you'll need to decide on your wedding date.
Most wedding service providers are booked months, or sometimes even a year or more in advance, so they're going to need something firmer than "next spring" to get you on their calendar.
It's also critical to have at least a ballpark idea of how much you want to spend on your wedding, including contributions from your families, if applicable. You might be able to adjust as you go, but you don't want to get to the contract phase with a couple of vendors, only to discover you'll have to skimp on everything else to afford them.
Once you've chosen your date and set an approximate budget, you can begin the process of finding your perfect wedding vendors.
2. Conduct an online search for local wedding vendors
The web is your best resource.
Some couples already have wedding vendors in mind before they get engaged, but if you're starting from scratch, Google is the best place to begin. Use location-specific search terms like "Jersey Shore wedding venues," "Monmouth County wedding photographer," or "wedding DJ near me" to help you find the highest-rated local vendors.
When you find a few that sound promising, visit their websites and social media accounts. You should be able to find service package options on their website, and their social presence will give you an idea of the types of events they work. While some vendors require you to contact them for a quote, others make their pricing transparent and easy to find, which means you'll know up front exactly what kind of value you'll get.
3. Ask your married friends for recommendations
Friends and relatives who have gotten married recently are a great resource.
If you loved your cousin's wedding photos or thought the DJ at your best friend's wedding played great music, ask for the company's name and contact information. Because many wedding vendors earn most of their business through word-of-mouth referrals, they may offer a pricing incentive if you mention who sent you to them.
4. Read customer reviews
Reviews are typically accurate, but trust your sources.
Another great way to research a wedding vendor is to check out what other couples say about them online. Sites like The Knot and Wedding Wire are huge repositories for wedding vendors across the country, but they don't necessarily offer a complete list – you should also check testimonials and social media reviews on an individual vendor's page, especially if they're a smaller business. A handful of detailed, positive Google or Facebook reviews from satisfied local couples is just as valuable as dozens of star ratings on The Knot.
5. Speak with vendors directly
Communication is key.
Your final step is to reach out to your top choice vendors and have conversation with them – ideally, in person. Schedule a tour of the venue. Stop in to the florist's shop. Make an appointment to meet with your photographer or entertainment provider. If geographical distance doesn't permit an in-person meeting, see if the vendor is willing to do a video call for your initial consultation. There's nothing like a face-to-face interaction with someone to help you determine their character and trustworthiness, both of which are essential in a good wedding vendor.
Once you've thoroughly vetted each potential vendor and understand what's included in their service contract, you can decide which ones meet your needs while staying within your budget. When researching and finding your perfect wedding vendors, choose the ones who make you feel confident that they can deliver your dream wedding.
Engaged couples have a lot of decisions to make when planning their wedding. After the big choices like the date, venue, and the guest list are made, your next step is choosing your wedding DJ – the person or team who will set the tone for your wedding day and make sure your guests are having a great time.
It's easy to treat wedding entertainment as a throwaway decision, but the quality of your DJ can make or break your reception. A good DJ and MC team keeps the event flowing seamlessly with a great playlist and an upbeat atmosphere; guests can't help but get up and dance. A mediocre team can barely keep people on the dance floor, and when wedding guests are more interested in their conversations than the music, the MC's announcements feel like an annoying interruption. That's why it's crucial to hire a reputable company that can deliver the wedding experience you want for yourselves and your guests.
5 questions to ask when choosing your wedding DJ
Whether you're just beginning your DJ search or trying to decide between vendors, be sure to consider the following factors before signing a contract:
1. How responsive, communicative and focused are they?
Some DJs provide entertainment services as a side gig, while others make it their full-time job. It's best to go with a vendor whose time is devoted to their business, so you can be sure that they'll respond to you in a timely manner when you have questions.
How long did it take them to get back to you when you requested a quote? If they left you waiting for more than a few days, they may show the same level of communication throughout the process, which doesn't bode well for any last-minute plan changes that may arise. Look for a company that makes its clients a priority and responds to emails and phone calls within one or two business days.
2. What is their planning process like?
If you've hired a DJ for a past event, you know how much granular detail goes into planning your music and announcements. Every DJ will ask you for a list of preferred genres, special requests and "do not play" songs to make sure they're playing what you want to hear, but consider their process for collecting that information. Do they scribble notes on a piece of paper during your consultation? Ask you for an emailed list before your wedding date? Provide a centralized online platform to track everything as you plan?
Organization is key, and should be your DJ's top priority when helping you select your music. The vendor you choose should also provide guidance in terms of announcements, wedding traditions (parent dances, bouquet toss, etc.) and overall event timeline.
3. Do they understand our wedding details and timeline?
No two weddings are exactly alike, and it's important to find a vendor that understands every detail of your wedding day, from your ceremony and reception entrance, to your last dance of the night. The more experience your wedding DJ company has, the more likely it is that they'll be able to stick to your plan and keep things on schedule throughout the event.
Your MC should also go over the people involved in your wedding, including their role (mother of the bride, maid of honor, best man, etc.), name pronunciations, and any special music you want played for each person.
4. What types of payment plans and methods do they offer?
In terms of cost, wedding entertainment is right up there with photography and videography, so it's important to understand the payment structure your wedding DJ offers. The best companies allow you to pay in installments after your initial deposit, and accept a variety of payment methods, including credit cards and PayPal.
5. How confident do we feel that this company will make our wedding day special?
With more than a decade of providing wedding sound and entertainment services to tri-state area couples, Hurricane Productions takes its role as a professional wedding entertainment company very seriously. We understand that choosing your wedding DJ can be a very personal decision based on your tastes and preferences, so we'll work with you on a customized plan to create an unforgettable event. People all over the world were popping champagne bottles on New Year's Eve, but Phil Karnicki and Amylin Ader had an extra reason to toast: They had just become husband and wife. On the afternoon of December 31, friends and family of the couple gathered at St. Rose of Lima Church in East Hanover, New Jersey, for a beautiful Catholic mass and wedding ceremony. Later that evening, the new Mr. and Mrs. Karnicki and their guests headed to Bear Brook Valley in Fredon, NJ for a fun-filled cocktail hour, reception, and New Year's Eve celebration. The soon-to-be newlyweds got ready with their respective wedding parties and shared a toast with them to kick off the day's events. Rachel Goodgal and Stephen Budinsky tied the knot at scenic Perona Farms in Andover, New Jersey. The beautifully landscaped grounds, which overlook Perona Lake, provided the perfect backdrop for the couple's day. After getting ready with their respective wedding parties, Rachel and Stephen shared a first look. Stephen waited for his bride in one of Perona Farms' sunny atriums, and Rachel walked up behind him. The couple enjoyed a few private moments together before the day's events began. In the Jewish tradition, the spouses-to-be signed the Ketubah in an intimate gathering of close family and friends. They then exchanged vows in a romantic outdoor ceremony.
On a gorgeous late summer day, Megan Doorly and Tyler Ruperto were married in the quiet New Jersey beach town of Lavallette.
The couple and their respective wedding parties celebrated and exchanged gifts as they prepared for the big day. Megan and her bridesmaids walked from their rental house down to the shore. Meanwhile, Tyler and his groomsmen departed from their rooms at the Ramada Inn in Toms River – where the new Mr. and Mrs. Ruperto would later hold their Versailles Ballroom wedding reception – and shared a toast on the bus ride to the beach.
The First Look
Megan and Tyler planned a first look that was captured by Hurricane Productions media professionals. The wedding party lined up along the entrance to the beach, creating an aisle for the bride to walk through. The groom waited for her near the water, with his back turned.
She tapped his shoulder and the two shared a private, emotional moment together before their ocean-side photo shoot.
The ceremony and the Versailles Ballroom wedding reception
That afternoon, family and friends gathered at the Lavallette Gazebo for Megan and Tyler's ceremony, for which Hurricane Productions provided a wireless sound system.
After the couple exchanged vows, guests headed over to the Versailles Ballroom at the Ramada Inn for the cocktail hour and reception. DJ and MC Alvin Gay kept the party going, from the grand introductions through the final dance of the evening.
As part of their package, Megan and Tyler received a feature-length, 60 to 90-minute edit of the full-day footage taken by our videographers. This included the first look, ceremony, special dances, toasts, and even a special Delta Gamma Song performed for Megan by her sorority sisters.

Traditionally, wedding photos and videos are all about the bride. "Prep" photos almost always focus on the bride and her bridesmaids – her dress, her shoes, her hair, her makeup, her jewelry, etc. And of course, during the ceremony, everyone stands up, turns around, and pulls out their phones and cameras when they hear the bridal march start to play – all eyes are on her.
But what about the groom? It takes two people to get married, and you and your spouse-to-be deserve an equal number of photos and videos of both of you. If your budget allows for a second photographer and videographer, you'll have lasting mementos from each of your perspectives on your wedding day, from both parties' preparations to your first look. The groom and his guys won't simply be an afterthought; they'll be just as important as the bride and her girls. This is a key consideration for same-sex couples as well: With two photographers and videographers, neither newlywed will get more attention than the other, and both of your pre-wedding memories will be equally captured.
Hurricane Productions offers full-day coverage of your wedding by two photographers and two videographers in our most robust all-inclusive package. On top of a full suite entertainment services, you'll receive up to 12 hours of photography and videography, access to our extensive online planning tools, a video/phone consultation with your photographers and videographers, and full rights to your photos and videos – all of which are securely stored on our cloud server for easy access.
There's nothing quite like a sparkler send-off to bookend a fantastic wedding reception.
Think about the typical end of a wedding reception. The music stops, the lights come on, and in an instant, the mood and the magic of the evening comes to a screeching halt. Guests slowly shuffle off the dance floor, gather their things, and mill around the venue saying goodbyes and having last-minute conversations. It's a pretty anticlimactic way to finish one of the most exciting events in a couple's life.
One way to end your wedding on a high note is to incorporate a sparkler send-off.
Before you and your new spouse leave your reception, have your friends and family line up outside your venue with sparklers. Once the sparklers are lit, your guests can raise them above their heads to create a pathway to your first night as newlyweds. This allows you to keep up the energy and excitement of the evening, and give your guests something big to talk about on their way out.
So what does a sparkler send-off look like? Check out the send-off guests gave this couple, who were married at HollyHedge Estate in New Hope, PA. In addition to providing DJ entertainment, Hurricane Productions was there to capture this special moment on video:
Whether you choose to close out your wedding with sparklers or a different way, you'll want to have your videographer there to document it. What better way to end your wedding video than with the special send-off? Hurricane Productions captures and edits wedding moments, including sparkler send-offs, into a beautiful, artistic compilations.
One such memory that many couples consider absolutely essential to capture is the First Look. This moment when the soon-to-be-newlyweds see each other in their wedding attire for the first time is special and intimate.
After the hustle and bustle of preparing for the ceremony and pictures, planning a First Look allows you to take a minute to breathe, relax, and remember what's important — each other.
Here are just a few examples of First Look videos that Hurricane Productions has created for our couples:
Whether you want your First Look to be a private moment between you and your spouse-to-be, or you want your family and friends there to witness it, it's important to speak with your videographer about capturing this beautiful and often emotional meeting. You and your new spouse will each have your own memories of that moment, but having a video means that every detail of your First Look will be documented on film.
Being able to go back and watch it unfold together in real time is an experience you won't want to miss out on. Plus, you'll be able to share your video with guests via social media, so they can witness your love and relive a joyous memory from your wedding day, too.
You and your fiance have likely given a lot of thought to the audio needs for your wedding reception – music, toasts, announcements, etc. But one often overlooked detail of the big day is sound for your ceremony.
Traditional church weddings may take care of music and audio, but if you're getting married at your reception venue or somewhere off-site like a beach, you'll likely be on your own in terms of setting up a sound system.
That's where Hurricane Productions can help: We offer complete ceremony sound packages as part of our services to make your wedding day as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.
Whether you and your spouse-to-be are exchanging vows indoors or outdoors, we'll be able to accommodate you with an auxiliary sound system for the duration of the ceremony. When you book Hurricane Productions for your wedding entertainment, we'll work with you to plan out the timing for ceremony – everything from the processional and recessional music to any special songs you want to play during the event.
You, your officiant and anyone speaking at your ceremony will be heard by all your guests over our crystal-clear system, which includes speakers, a microphone and a mic stand. Because our setup is completely wireless, no one has to worry about tripping over cords as they walk down the aisle. It's also ideal for remote locations like lakefront or garden weddings, since we can run everything on battery power.
Stephanie and Chuck Santo were married at The Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury, New Jersey.
Hurricane Productions was there throughout the entire event — from pre-ceremony to the afterparty — to help the couple celebrate their wedding.
Hurricane's photography team captured portraits and candid shots for the newlyweds, while the video team documented the day in motion picture. After the ceremony, the new Mr. and Mrs. Santo took advantage of the beautiful, sunny weather and had a photo shoot at Deep Cut Gardens in nearby Middletown, NJ.
Hurricane co-founders Vincent Velasquez and Strato Doumanis welcomed guests to Stephanie and Chuck's reception as the MC and DJ, respectively. Lighting tech Thomas Bishop set the ambiance with twin totem uplighting and pinspot lighting in the ballroom. The couple's friends and family danced the night away, and when the reception officially ended, DJ Nate Hawley took over to play some tunes for an afterparty.
December may be a notoriously cold month in New Jersey, but friends and family of Samantha and Michael Quinn felt the warmth of the couple's love on their winter wedding day.
After their ceremony at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hoboken, the newlyweds and their guests headed over to The Graycliff in Moonachie, NJ. Hurricane Productions ensured a spectacular evening by providing lighting, entertainment, photography and videography throughout the wedding.
To set the ambiance for their elegant affair, Samantha and Michael opted for blue full ballroom uplighting, twin totem lighting, and a custom Name in Lights display. A photo montage of the couple played on the TV screen as their friends and family enjoyed dinner. The open-air photo booth allowed guests to create their own memories as they celebrated with the new Mr. and Mrs.
Samantha and Michael's guests were on the dance floor all night thanks to entertainment led by Hurricane co-founders, DJ Strato Doumanis and MC Vincent Velasquez (who grew up on the same street as the bride). Media director Austin King and videographer Corynn Egreczky documented the wedding on video – from the bridal party preparations and the ceremony to the fun-filled reception – and created a beautiful highlight reel of the day. Later in the evening, Corynn switched over to photographer and captured even more special moments shared by the happy couple and their loved ones.
