How many times do you hear a client say, “I’m interested in a Sweet 16 for my daughter but I’m not looking to have one of those ‘Super Sweet 16s.’
Maybe you don’t want to admit this. But sit down and take a deep breath - the majority of your clientele is middle class.
Just because you include uplighting or TV screens in your entertainment packages doesn’t justify calling it a ‘Super’ Sweet 16.
But don't worry, you can still offer your 'premium services.' No reason to call it Super.
The definition of a ‘Super Sweet 16,’ as presented by MTV includes beyond extravagent decor (your uplighting doesn’t qualify), celebrity appearances/performances (such as Chris Brown and Sean Kingston) and surprises like a luxury sports car waiting at valet.
That brings us to our next point...
1. MTV owns the trademark and created the phrase
It’s one thing to promote pop culture in your product or tie it into what you do. It’s another thing to completely rip off a brand name created by a media conglomerate. (By the way, the show premiered EIGHT years ago).
Talk about lazy, uncreative and flat out boring.
Now...go ahead...wipe your brow and start thinking.

Raven's Winter Wonderland Sweet 16 was very much wintery. The day of her Sweet 16 happened to fall on the day of the largest snowstorm of the season.

The Story: Brianna and her family grew up with New York City roots so Brianna envisioned a Sweet 16 themed around the Big Apple.
From a custom animation which featured Brianna's portraits throughout an animated scene of Times Square to a 'Name in Lights' gobo that reflected the skyline of the city, Brianna communicated her wants and Hurricane brought the NYC vibe to her event.
Brianna and her friends also snapped Instagram photos on their phones throughout the night which streamed right to the four video screens provided by Hurricane Productions.

Maybe some couples who embark on a second marriage would shy away from a younger entertainment company. But not Deborah and Bobby. This couple met with Vincent and Strato numerous times and sensed the duo's maturity and in-depth understanding of their music preferences.
The Bernard's Inn played host to this wedding which featured uplighting and dancing throughout the night.
The Story: Katherine grew up with Hurricane Productions. The company entertained a number of events while she attended elementary and middle school. Her family even hired Hurricane for Katherine's 13th birthday party.
So when it came time for Katherine's Sweet 16, there was no question about her choice of entertainment.
Members of the Bernacchi family stayed connected with Vincent via Facebook through the years.
The relationship that this couple built with the company is second to none. Between visiting the office, following posts on Facebook and exchanging emails and texts, Hurricane delivered a fun-filled wedding celebration for a cool couple.
The Story: What's cool about this event is that from start to finish, it takes about 16 hours to produce.
Setup in Livingston Hall commences around 10am and Hurricane's production staff works straight through until the start of the event at 9pm to create a nightlife, club-inspired atmosphere for graduating seniors.
Then it's non-stop entertainment for four hours with a cocktail-style celebration.
This is one of their last events together as a senior class before graduation so RU always makes it a night to remember.
The Story: Proms are a unique event. Students change and mature at a rapid pace from a year-to-year basis.
Trends are different, styles are different, and the music is different as well.
But each year, Hurricane Productions continues to adapt and make each prom a little different to suit each outgoing senior class.
From lighting design to music selection, the nightclub atmosphere that Hurricane Productions creates gives the guests a product that is more mature and sophisticated than a Sweet 16 but not quite a wedding.
The Story: Hosted by Hurricane Productions and Sterling Gardens, Lauren’s Sweet 16 featured all the entertainment elements that make a complete event – a fun and loving family, club-inspired music, and interactive entertainment.
Lauren’s family opted for a full-service experience from Hurricane. Although they initially just considered Hurricane a ‘DJ company,’ Lauren and her family quickly realized that they could find a professional photography and videography service from the company as well.
The Story: Gena and Steve captured the most beautiful day of the season as they celebrated their wedding amongst a diverse group of family and friends.
With music that ranged from oldies to top 40, Gena requested a set of traditional Arabic music. Both sides of the family danced and celebrated with each other while overlooking the New York City skyline.
Hurricane Productions provided entertainment for both the cocktail hour and reception, lighting and video enhancements for the event. Hurricane created custom graphics for the screens inside of the banquet facility and also streamed real-time photos for all guests to view.

Of course a breathtaking venue for lighting like the TPC Jasna Polana helps with creating an elegant atmosphere. But when it came to planning this wedding – at least musically – this is a couple who did it as a team.
Rebecca and Joe used all of Hurricane Productions’ tools - including online access its entire music library - to direct their wedding experience.
The Story: Adam and Dana celebrated a winter wedding in the elegant setting of the ‘One and Only’ Westmount Country Club in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. With vibrant reds and room decor, this wedding stands out because of the couples meticulous attention to every detail.
Believe it or not, some couples get caught up in the ceremonies and saying ‘hello’ to every guest. But not these two. Adam and Dana were adamant about making the dance floor the focal point of their celebration.
The couple chose a unique setting in Connecticut for their wedding celebration.
Vincent and the Hurricane team met with Jen and Bill four times to plan all of their musical details. Jen knew exactly what she wanted from the onset of planning and pitched in ideas for all aspects of her lighting design and custom graphic proofs.
But more impressive is that neither the couple nor Hurricane blinked at the prospect of entertaining a large wedding nearly four hours from the company’s homebase. With a keen attention to detail, the couple celebrated a flawless wedding.
The most impressive undertaking by Hurricane is the recap video. It was produced in real-time, during the Marathon and shown to all dancers, volunteers, families and more right before the Board of Directors revealed the total monies raised to all.
The Story: Fireworks, interactive entertainment and custom signature enhancements helped Selena celebrate her Quinceanera at the Palace at Somerset Park with unforgettable elegance. All spectrums of music including salsa, meregenue, bachata, and top 40 kept the dance floor invigorated throughout the evening.
Hurricane Productions provided videography, photography, DJ entertainment, montage services, uplighting, design enhancements and more. Selena and her family received photographs in high-resolution and video in DVD format just a few weeks following the event.
The Story: The day before an outdoor wedding celebration is stressful. Especially if it rains.
But following a day of showers, the sun held up the weekend after Memorial Day for Brian and Elizabeth.
The couple celebrated a tented wedding on a summer day in New Jersey – devoid of humidity or a cloud in the sky. Guests congregated in the garden for the wedding ceremony, enjoyed cocktail hour during dusk and danced together into moonlight.
The weather coincided with Brian and Liz’s music selection – a perfect mix of oldies, Spanish music, and top 40 to keep all ages socializing and dancing together throughout the evening.

Macaluso’s did not hesitate to host Brianna’s New York City themed Sweet 16. Brianna and her family came in with an exact idea for what they wanted Brianna’s event to look like. Macaluso’s, along with Hurricane Productions, brought that idea to life.
Family and friends entered a ballroom with Brianna’s “Name in Lights,” designed in house at Hurricane, shining on the wall. Her name was complemented by a New York City skyline gobo on the opposite wall.
Hurricane Pulse gave guests another way to interact at the party. Brianna’s personalized hashtag, #brianna16, allowed guests’ photos to be streamed directly to the screens and printed automatically at stations around the room.
All was tied together with dark hues of purple full-ballroom uplighting, fully transforming Brianna’s event into a New York City Sweet 16.

Woodlake Country Club in Lakewood Township, NJ is the perfect venue for any Sweet 16. The staff is welcoming to families of all backgrounds and knows exactly what to do for all types of cultural ceremonies. Match that with a beautiful ballroom that overlooks a picturesque golf course and you have a wonderful choice for your special event.
Lively does not begin to describe Tobi's family. The energetic, tight-knit family was ready to celebrate at her Sweet 16. Entertained by Hurricane Productions, Tobi's family danced the night away.
Hurricane Productions is a DJ Entertainment and Event Innovation company out of Red Bank, NJ. Hurricane is known for their incredible attention to detail and making sure that every event they host is better than their client expected.
Hurricane Productions provided DJ entertainment, uplighting, custom "name in lights" gobo and a photo/video montage presentation for Tobi at Woodlake Country Club in Lakewood, NJ.
Tobi's mother was elated with the Hurricane Productions performance for her daughter's Sweet 16. "Keep up the excellent work that you are known for," she said. "The sky is the limit!" She is not the only supporter of Hurricane Productions. Previous clients always recommend the company and some have used them for multiple events as their family DJ Entertainment company.
Tobi and her parents wanted family videos shown at her Sweet 16, so Hurricane Productions did a VHS to DVD conversion and edited the media for them. Photos were scanned and combined with the video to create a montage just for Tobi.
With an eye for photography, Kara Battistoni searched the room, spotted a DJ and decided that would be her best bet.
But she wasn't taking pictures at the time. In fact, she was giving a presentation and needed an extension cord.
"She asked for a cord and we had a quick conversation about photography," Hurricane Productions co-owner and resident DJ Strato Doumanis said about their meeting at a Rutgers University entrepreneurial conference in 2010. "And in passing she handed me her business card and told me to reach out if I ever needed photos."
That interaction led to a year of freelance work for Battistoni with the Red Bank-based entertainment company in 2011.
Battistoni, 25, of Providence, RI recently joined Hurricane Innovation and Productions' staff as its exclusive photographer and videographer.
Battistoni will document each Hurricane Productions event and help the company expand it's 'Innovation' brand.
"This is a commitment that we've been waiting to make with the right person," Hurricane Productions co-owner Vincent Anthony Velasquez said. "Kara understands the value of our visual product and this will not only expand that, but this will change the way our clients and our competitors view our business model."
Hurricane's investment into visuals should come as no surprise. The company started posting original event content on Facebook in 2007. Four years later, the addition of Battistoni helps Hurricane focus on giving each client a more complete, full-service experience.
As for Battistoni, Rutgers recruited her as a collegiate swimmer out of high school.
She initially tried business school but soon realized that she gravitated to art classes in the Mason Gross School of the Arts.
She started snapping photographs on both a medium format Mamimya and Canon35mm film camera before transitioning to DSLR cameras.
While at Mason Gross she met professional filmmaker Alrick Brown.
Brown's piece, Kinyarwanda, won the 'Audience Award' at Sundance in 2011. Battistoni worked on the project and credits Brown for getting her involved in film.
Aside from event photography and video at Hurricane Innovation and Productions, her portfolio includes promotional photos, headshots and videos for local musicians.
A fresh start isn't just about moving to a new location, searching for job or even starting a diet.
A fresh start is about redefining character and applying it to daily life.
Robert Padovano, 18, of Marlboro, NJ joins the Hurricane Productions entertainment team as a fresh face in 2012.
But his decision to join the company comes from his desire to grow and learn new aspects of media and entertainment.
"I want to explore my talents," Padovano said. "I realize that this business is not just about DJing and parties. There is so much more out there."
Robert started his career in mobile entertainment at 13-years-old when his parents purchased a DJ unit for him.
Robert's previous experience in the business will help him entertain events in Hurricane's Sweet 16 division.
"Rob is a strong player coming to an already strong team," Hurricane Productions co-owner Vincent Anthony Velasquez said. "I think he will get a chance to be himself here and explore many creative options."
Prospective clients will get a chance to meet Robert through many mediums.
Wedding celebrations are all about feeling good and letting loose. But in order to create that feel, it takes more than just music.
Merri-Makers General Manager Danielle Gomez and her staff at Neshanic Valley Gold Club are not only customer service oriented, but are focused on accommodating all vendors. The way a staff and a catering facility treats its vendors (and vice versa) translates beyond handshakes and 'thank yous.'
That atmosphere creates a fun and laid back environment. Consequently, the couple celebrating their special day feels those vibes throughout their event.
Danielle understands this philosophy and therefore, events are Neshanic Valley are second to none.
As for the venue itself, Neshanic Valley Golf Club provides a unique and creative setting for a wedding celebration. If a venue overlooking Somerset County isn't picturesque enough, the banquet room itself allows for any creative entertainment company to come in and have some fun. With a high ceiling over the dance floor and beautiful windows surround the room, the possibilities are endless.
At the particular wedding pictured in this post, the bride wanted the uplighting design to match her bridesmaids' dresses. But she also did not want to overwhelm the room with purple. So therefore, Hurricane Productions designed purple lightscaping on just the area surrounding the dance floor.
This created a nightclub-style atmosphere surrounding the dance floor but allowed guests to visit the bar and eat dinner without being saturated in purple uplighting.
Beyond uplighting design, Hurricane Productions provided video screens and custom graphics for the bride and groom. As you can see in the photos, the screens displayed custom graphic work designed exclusively at Hurricane Productions.
Almost lost in all of this is the fact that Hurricane Productions delivered a seamless performance for the bride and groom at Neshanic Valley Golf Club. From introductions to spotlight dances and even a surprise singing performance to 'Unforgettable,' by the bride - Hurricane executed a perfect wedding celebration.
Guests danced the entire night with music by Hurricane Productions' lead DJ Strato Doumanis while host Vincent Velasquez guided the celebration from start to finish.
Hurricane Productions transformed the Cornucopia Cruise Line in Perth Amboy and Hoboken to a nightclub destination for Sweet 16s in NJ.
Club-style lighting, custom graphics, 'Name in Lights,' and other distinct entertainment features brought the NJ-based cruise line to life with a dinner cruise around NJ and NY harbors.
Aside from incredible food and service, the Cornucopia provided a unique setting for a Sweet 16s.

Open any American history book and before you get to the chapter about the American Revolution, you'll be introduced to a pamphlet entitled 'Common Sense,' written by Thomas Paine.
Although Mike Walter of Elite Entertainment would blush at his book, 'Running Your Multi-Op,' being compared to a literary work that helped shape the core values leading up to the American Revolution, his book evokes the same type of education for the DJ industry through scenario-driven theories and value-based life lessons.
Now before the comparison gets too far out of hand (DJs, don't go to war over this book), as you read you'll find yourself creating a mental checklist of your own DJ experiences.
Also, if you're not a note-taker or highlighter, I suggest you change your ways for this book. Walter doesn't lose you with anecdotes, he teaches you with them. But you need to make sure you note those sections for future quick reference.
'Running Your Multi-Op,' isn't meant to to jog your imagination or paint creative scenes in your head. Walter makes you feel like he's having a conversation with you about your specific DJ company. It may initially seem designed to be a self-help book but it's not. And that's a good thing.
Walter writes like he speaks. He admits that he writes in a matter-of-fact style. You'll quickly catch on but don't expect his words to always be pleasant. There will be parts of the book that evoke those DJ memories that haunt you or he'll make you second-guess the way you've structured your company.
It's refreshing that he addresses his ego a number of times. Walter is a successful business owner and concedes that he enjoys the attention he gets from hearing his voice on a microphone in front of large groups of people. This isn't a turn-off. In fact, it helps the reader continue to turn the pages.
He is self-aware about the way the industry perceives him but also how his staff does/will perceive him. This separation of self creates a sense of authority in his words.
If you've had lunch with Walter or listened to him speak at previous DJ Expos around the country, you're already familiar with some of his stories. He visits his Music Mixer training philosophies, introduces you to Phil - a former groom turned Elite emcee, and also educates you about what he calls his atypical beginnings in the DJ industry via Star DJs and his partnership turned purchase of Elite Entertainment.
If you're a Millenial (read the book for his definition) you will have a constant tug-of-war with some of Walter's theories about your work ethic or how you tackle the 'real world' on a daily basis.
It stings at times but he offers advantages and disadvantages of the Millenial generation and even admits to some of the pitfalls of his own generation.
Before you jump to conclusions about another elder hating on the younger generation, Walter makes it clear that Millenials need him and he needs Millenials. Common sense, remember?
The book is broken up into three different sections - 'Finding Talent,' 'Cloning Yourself,' and 'Running Your Multi-Op."
I suggest you don't read this book is one seating. I tried it and failed.
At less than 150 pages I'd generally categorize it as a quick read, but it's not. You need to digest each section. Don't move on until you're ready because you can quickly become overwhelmed by your own ideas and miss out on Walter's points of emphasis.

This is a must-read from a must-meet person in the DJ industry. If you haven't purchased the book already, it would benefit you to do so before you watch and listen to Walter deliver his 'Running Your Multi-Op' seminar at this year's DJ Times DJ Expo next month in Atlantic City, NJ.
After reading (or listening) to the book, whether you're a single-op, multi-op, or a DJ by trade, you'll be inspired to change your bad habits and maybe even start your own personal or professional DJ revolution.
