Rutgers' Derby Days Event Shatters Fundraising Record

The Iota Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi at Rutgers University hosted yet another successful Derby Days event. The two-week long 'Derby Days' culminated with Lip Sync performance at the Livingston Recreational Center.  Along with eight sororities, Sigma Chi facilitated a record breaking $300,007 for Children's Miracle Network. A portion of the monies raised will also be donated to the participating sororities respective philanthropies. Contributing to the record were Phi Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa, Delta Gamma, Alpha Gamma Delta, Sigma Delta Tau, and Gamma Phi Beta.  Each team performed dances that followed a format and theme.  Some themes included Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Super Heroes, The Game of Life and many others.

You can watch each performance by clicking here.

Hurricane Productions - a production partner of the event for a decade - added a new visual element to the Lip Sync performances. Hurricane made each scene come to life by projection mapping images and video for each sorority. The visuals were mapped to 6x20ft theatrical scrims that flanked the 42''x32'' stage. heir scenes come to life.

In addition to the scrims, Hurricane also provided lighting, videography and production for the event.  Lighting director Nick Nittoli took control of the lighting that was requested by each sorority.  Robbie Padovano produced the show making sure each team adhered to a timeline of events. Media Director Austin King was there to capture all the routines via videography.

Claiming the Lip Sync title this year was Phi Sigma Sigma with ZTA coming in a close second.  The two sororities were extremely close in competition throughout all events this Derby Days season.  The anticipation was high not knowing who was going to claim the 2016 Derby Days title.  In the end, it was Zeta Tau Alpha who edged out the competition.  ZTA raised $65,000 out of the over $300,007 for Children's Miracle Network.  That $65,000 raised broke their $48,902 record of the 2015 Derby Days.  Needless to say, we look forward to seeing more records being broken next year as each sorority will continue to raise money towards Children's Miracle Network.

Gillian and Charles - Housingworks Bookstore in New York City

Some may look no further than a cup of coffee at a local bookstore for a romantic date. But now imagine a bookstore as the storybook backdrop for your wedding day. Gillian and Charles - who met in a Creative Writing class at Rutgers University - did just that. They chose Housingworks Bookstore in Manhattan for their ceremony and reception.

Hurricane Productions captured the day in photo and video, and also provided DJ entertainment.

Dave Costantini  -- one of the company's most sought-after wedding photographers -- caught every moment from bridal prep to last dance while other members of Hurricane's media team stepped behind the lens to capture video in a low-light setting.

Housingworks Bookstore is quaint, but what it lacks in size is made up for in ambiance. DJ Alvin Gay used Technic 1200 turntables to pay homage to the art of DJing in such a cool space. DJ Alvin helped the couple musically plan their ceremony and continuously played their requests through cocktail hour and the reception.

The couple used Hurricane's extensive online planning tools to work alongside Alvin to create their perfect playlist.

Hurricane Productions provides entertainment, photography and videography for weddings in the Tri-State Area.  To learn more, check out our pricing page or request a quote.
